The Playwrights' Playlist: C.A. Johnson

Okay guys! So I grew up in and around New Orleans, which is one of those places that offers its residents such a wide array of art and culture, that to call our tastes eclectic, would be an understatement. I grew up dancing on sidewalks to The Meters every Mardi Gras but also belting Destiny’s Child into fake microphones in my bedroom.  I’ve crooned to The Temptations and cried with Elliot Smith. Heck, I think my earliest memory of consuming music was begging my great aunt to turn down her Nina Simone records so I could watch Sesame Street (don’t judge...I was six).

At first, narrowing all that history down to 15 songs felt completely impossible.  But when I took two steps back and tried connecting my current favorites to the stories I tell, the list grew smaller.  Some of these songs are songs I write to.  Others are songs I just can’t shake.  They make it onto all my playlists or play in the background of my dreams.  And since these crazy lives we lead are mostly random and uncertain, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say these songs might be important to me.  So yeah. Enjoy.
